For the past two years I have been working on the concept drawings,
lyrics, set, script, and direction of a 90 minute piece of musical theater
entitled "The Island of Florida: A Foundation Myth". The play is about a boy
named Delian Ponzales, who is the unfortunate result of an ill-advised and
quickly annulled marriage between Ponce De Leon and a Floridian witch.
Essentially, it is a history of Florida as a wildly inaccurate myth that
compresses many narratives from throughout Florida history into one that
conflates the Seminole Wars, the Elian Gonzales controversy, colonization
by the Spanish, the demonization and genocide of Native Americans, the
fountain of youth, the bay of pigs, booty bass, dolphin worship, and
Orwell's Animal Farm. The piece in Collisions and Pileups, entitled The
Old Hag At Home in the Everglades, will be a work made up of various props,
set pieces and costumes from the play, in which a video projection of
Delian's mother, The Old Hag, will sing her lament: "I Sing My Regrets To
The Egrets".
